Phallocrate (Male Chauvinist): political art sculpture against patriarchy

A man's torso with no arms or legs, and at its centre an outsized sex. Phallocrate (Male Chauvinist) is a political art sculpture in patinated plaster and recycled resin, a one-of-a-kind piece, 80 cm tall, created by Arson Sculptures, a French sculptor based in Drôme provençale.

Manhood reduced to a symbol

Here, the man has no arms left to act and no legs to move forward: all he has is his sex, swollen out of proportion, set at the heart of the sculpture like an emblem. A dehumanised manhood that thinks itself all-powerful and is held together by that one attribute alone. On its raw base, the deliberately disproportionate figure plays on the contrast between the strength it displays and the fragility it hides.

Political art against the abuse of power

Phallocrate questions male abuse of power, the excesses of patriarchy and the illusion of omnipotence that comes with domination. Arson Sculptures subverts the codes of male statuary, the statues of heroes and gods, to make a provocative, critical work. It is a little unsettling, and that is the point.

Where to place it

In a contemporary art collection, an office, a library or anywhere that enjoys debate, Phallocrate does not go unnoticed. Give it a stable support and a little room: it is meant to be seen from every angle.
