Musulmane (Muslim Woman): protest art sculpture in plaster and gold leaf

In front, a dark veil that erases everything. Behind, nudity covered in gold. Musulmane (Muslim Woman) is a protest art sculpture in plaster, 60 cm tall, mounted on a metal base: a one-of-a-kind piece created by Arson Sculptures, a French sculptor based in Drôme provençale.

Veil and nudity, shadow and light

A woman in a burqa, with heavy, opaque folds: the garment speaks of invisibility and confinement. But whoever walks around the sculpture discovers, at the back, bare buttocks covered in gold leaf. The contrast is striking. The gold speaks of freedom and of a woman's own worth, and it underlines the paradox of a body usually kept from view, both hidden and sexualised.

A protest art sculpture about women's bodies

Through this opposition, Musulmane questions the norms, taboos and mechanisms of oppression that can weigh on the female body, wherever they come from. It is a deliberately provocative work that does not try to please but to make people think, and it reveals itself in two stages: from the front, then from behind.

Where to place Musulmane

On a plinth or a piece of furniture, in a living room, a library or a contemporary art collection, ideally somewhere people can walk around it, since it is by walking around it that the work reveals its full meaning.
