Gornica: contemporary Provence painting, Gordes the lost village

Gordes as postcards never show it. Gornica is a contemporary Provence painting, an original acrylic on card of about 50 × 60 cm, from the series "Gordes village perdu" (Gordes, the lost village). It is one of a kind, created by Arson Sculptures, a French artist based in Bouchet, in Drôme provençale.

Gornica, a wink at Guernica

The title is a pun, and a protest. Guernica is Picasso's cry over a village destroyed by bombs. Gornica is Gordes, a village destroyed another way: without noise, without ruins, slowly emptied of its soul by money. The disaster is less visible, but the village has disappeared all the same.

Once a jewel of Provence, Gordes has become a shadow of itself. Inspired by a true story, Gornica denounces the village's transformation into a tourist set: luxury second homes, mercenary shops, mass tourism, residents gone, and a management focused on profit alone. The painting keeps the memory of what has disappeared.

Far from lavender fields and blue skies, Gornica looks Provence in the eye. It is a committed work, between social testimony and painting, that asks a simple, uncomfortable question: what is left of a village when the people who brought it to life have gone?
